About the museum

The diocesan museum of Spoleto was opened at the end of the 1960s to preserve and enhance the historic-artistic heritage of the archdiocese of Spoleto-Norcia. It is housed in the Palazzo Arcivescovile, formerly a Benedictine monastery and earlier the residence of the Lombard dukes, and occupies the wing known as the “appartamento del Cardinale” (Cardinal’s apartment).

The works are arranged in chronological order in the reception rooms, with 16th-century doors, mostly 18th-century ceilings and frescoes of the second half of the 16th century. The route runs from the origins to the Baroque and brings together local and foreign artists, among them the Master of the Blue Cross, Neri di Bicci, Filippino Lippi, Domenico Beccafumi, the Cavalier d’Arpino and Sebastiano Conca; in the sculpture section there are Madonnas with Child of the 13th and 14th centuries and a bust of Urban VIII attributed to Gian Lorenzo Bernini.

At the end of the visit, from the Sala del Berengario, where liturgical vestments and 17th- and 18th-century silverware are displayed, one enters the Romanesque church of Sant’Eufemia (11th–12th century), with galleries above the aisles, Umbrian frescoes of the 15th century and a 12th-century altar frontal.
