About the museum

The Museo archeologico nazionale di Venosa is housed in the basement galleries of the Renaissance Pirro del Balzo castle and opened in 1991. In 2021, thirty years after its opening, the displays were completely renovated and equipped with a rich multimedia educational apparatus, which makes it one of the most technologically advanced museums in southern Italy.

The new route is divided into six sections, each introduced by a touch screen with animations, videos, photographs and in-depth information. The first section is dedicated to the castle and the town, home of the Latin poet Horace; the other five, arranged chronologically and by topography, tell the history of Venosa and the Vulture area from the pre-Roman phase (mid-4th to 3rd century BC) to the Renaissance.

The largest section covers the Roman period, from the foundation of the Latin colony of Venusia in 291 BC to the late Empire. Among the most valuable pieces are the inscribed cippi from the Auguraculum of Banzi and the Tabula Osco-Bantina, the collection of late Republican and Imperial sculpture, including a marble head of a Diadumenos from the late 1st century AD, and a rich corpus of inscriptions. Three video mappings complete the display.
