About the museum

The museum is housed in the restored premises of the Borgo Castello in Calitri, in Alta Irpinia. The route grew out of the permanent exhibition of Calitri ceramics “Una tradizione che si rinnova” (A Tradition That Renews Itself), opened on 25 August 2001, and the museum was established on 29 September 2008; the collection is still constantly evolving.

The route presents ceramics and terracottas from antiquity to the present, with finds of the Fossa culture, materials of the Roman period, medieval and Renaissance majolica, contemporary artworks, historic building bricks, industrial ceramics and traditional objects of local use. Many pieces come from excavations, donations from private individuals and collectors, and loans from other museums.

The exhibition documents the different working techniques and the town’s close ties with ceramic production.
