About the museum
The museum, opened in 2006, grew out of a project to promote the archaeological heritage carried out by the municipality of Vaglio Basilicata together with the Soprintendenza per i Beni Archeologici della Basilicata (archaeological heritage authority of Basilicata). It is located in the centre of the village and offers a route of evocative reconstructions, archaeological finds and multimedia displays that tells the story of the life and rituals of ancient Lucania.
The two archaeological sites of the Vaglio area presented by the museum are the Italic settlement of Serra di Vaglio, inhabited from the 9th to the 3rd century BC, and the sanctuary of Rossano di Vaglio, dedicated to the Oscan goddess Mefitis and built around the middle of the 4th century BC. The settings include a 6th-century BC royal palace (reggia), where the ritual of the aristocratic banquet is re-enacted, and a 4th-century BC sanctuary with devotional offerings to the goddess.
Interactive installations use touchscreens, contactless controls and voice commands. The museum also hosts a route on the machines of Leonardo da Vinci and on the history of the Lucanian territory. The grave goods of the young princess of the 6th century BC are not kept here but in the Museo archeologico nazionale della Basilicata “Dinu Adamesteanu” in Potenza.
