About the museum

The museum originates from the bequest of the Pesaro scholar Annibale degli Abbati Olivieri (1708–1789), who gave the city his library and archaeological heritage, including antiquities he had received from his friend Giovan Battista Passeri. It is one of the oldest museums in the Marche and was first opened on 31 July 1892.

It is housed on the ground floor of Palazzo Almerici, a 17th-century noble palace in the historic centre of Pesaro, and is run by the Fondazione Ente Olivieri. The new permanent display, opened in December 2022 after lengthy restoration work, documents about a thousand years of local history, from the Picene age to the late Imperial period.

The route is divided into four sections: the Picene necropolis of Novilara, the Lucus Pisaurensis (a Roman-age cult site), the municipium of Pisaurum and 18th-century collecting. Key pieces include the naval battle stele, the Novilara grave goods of the 8th–7th century BC and the bilingual Etruscan-Latin inscription of Lucius Cafatius. According to the foundation's website, the museum is currently closed for restoration work at Palazzo Almerici.
