About the museum
The church of San Domenico has medieval origins, linked to the arrival of the Dominicans in Fano in 1216. In the late 14th century it took on a Gothic structure, and in the 18th century it was remodelled by the architect Francesco Gasparoli with late Baroque altars. The bell tower was destroyed during the Second World War.
The building had been disused for more than sixty years when the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Fano began a restoration in 2006, costing over two million euros, which brought to light a narrative fresco with Stories of Saint John the Baptist attributed to the school of Ottaviano Nelli. Jacopo del Cassero, mentioned by Dante in the Purgatorio, was buried in the church.
The church, now deconsecrated, houses the Foundation's collection, arranged to recall the original locations of the works: altarpieces and sacred canvases from the 16th to the 17th century, including the Sposalizio della Vergine (Marriage of the Virgin) by Guercino, and works by Simone Cantarini, Sebastiano Ceccarini, Simone de Magistris, Federico Barocci, Palma il Giovane and Federico Zuccari. The spaces, covering over a thousand square metres, also host concerts.
