About the museum
The museum is housed in the Castle of Pantelleria, also called the Barbacane, one of the oldest buildings on the island. It stands at the mouth of the old harbour and overlooks the town centre; its present form is largely due to Aragonese works of the 15th century, while its origins are uncertain and possibly Byzantine. It is built of the island’s lava stone bound with lime, with mostly barrel vaults and a dome in the circular tower.
After restorations begun in 1991, in 2010 the castle became the seat of the regional archaeological museum established by the Sicilian Region. The three Roman heads of Caesar, Titus and Antonia Minor, found during excavations on the island, were permanently placed there.
The underground part is not accessible; the visitable area is reached by a masonry staircase, and from the terrace there is a view of the harbour and the Strait of Sicily.
