About the museum
The museum tells the story of Gela, a Greek colony founded on the southern coast of Sicily, through ceramics, bronzes and coins displayed in chronological order, from prehistory to the Middle Ages. It also houses the headquarters of the Parco archeologico di Gela, which comprises several sites in the province of Caltanissetta.
The oldest core of the collections consists of two private collections, the Navarra collection and the Nocera collection. The first was assembled at the end of the 19th century by Baron Giuseppe Navarra with materials from clandestine digs in the necropoleis and includes numerous Corinthian and Attic vases. Among the Attic black-figure vases, dating from the late 6th and early 5th centuries BC, are works attributed to the Painter of Gela and the Painter of Eucharides, and many lekythoi of the Phanillys class. Among the red-figure vases of the first half of the 5th century BC are works by masters such as the Painter of Edinburgh, the Boreas Painter, the Painter of the Boston Phiale and Brygos. Merchant ships carried these vases to Gela, and the wreck of one of them, found off the coast, has provided important data on ancient shipbuilding and on the city's trade.
Among the best-known objects are a Silenic antefix, an archaic mask, a horse's head, a silver didrachm of Gela and a bronze Corinthian helmet. The museum has been closed for some time for restoration and extension works.
