About the museum
The Museo dei relitti greci in Gela stands on state-owned land at Bosco Littorio, not far from the Emporio greco, and opened on 24 February 2026. The building covers around 4,000 square metres, and its timber roof recalls an upturned hull.
At the centre of the route is the wreck “Gela I”, a 5th-century BC Greek merchant ship discovered in 1988 off contrada Bulala, just over five metres deep. The timbers were recovered in two phases, between 2003 and 2008, and restored in Portsmouth.
Around the hull are displayed the cargo finds, including transport amphorae, Attic pottery, orichalcum ingots and objects from life on board. The museum also has multimedia rooms, an immersive room with virtual reality headsets that recreate the voyage and the shipwreck, teaching rooms and spaces for lectures.
