About the museum
The Museo Diocesano di Catania holds above all the historic movable furnishings of the Cathedral, and is therefore the museum of the cathedral and the episcopal see. Works from diocesan sources also document aspects of the life of numerous churches, both religious and secular, in the city and its region.
It is housed in the former Seminario dei Chierici, on Piazza Duomo, a building restored while respecting its original features. The display of sacred art follows the layout of the rooms and extends over three floors, with works grouped by material categories such as silverware, vestments, sculptures and paintings. The collection is divided into two major sections: the first, on the whole second floor and in one room on the third, brings together works from the Cathedral; the second, between the third and fourth floors, contains artifacts from other churches of the city and the diocese.
The visit includes the panoramic terraces built above Porta Uzeda, erected in 1695 after the earthquake of 1693, from which you can see Baroque Catania, Etna and the sea. The visit also includes the Terme Achilliane, one of the most significant Roman buildings of the imperial era in Catania, whose remains extend beneath the Cathedral and the former Seminary; they can be visited with a dedicated ticket.
