About the museum
The Museo Archeologico San Lorenzo is housed in the church of San Lorenzo, a 13th-century building that preserves traces of earlier religious structures and offers the experience of a museum inside another museum. The museum is part of the Musei Civici di Cremona system and holds the main core of the city's archaeological collections.
The display tells the story of Roman Cremona, founded in 218 BC as a bulwark against the Gauls and made a municipium after the lex Iulia of 89 BC. The route presents over 500 objects in three sections: the public space, with the monumental remains of a large building possibly identifiable as a theatre; the private space, documented by rich domus with mosaics and frescoes; and the necropolises, with parts of funerary monuments and grave goods.
Visitors can use a virtual viewer that lets them enter the reconstruction of some rooms of the Domus del Ninfeo, including the peristyle, storeroom and bedroom. The museum pays particular attention to accessibility, with educational aids for partially sighted and blind visitors and easy-read materials. It also offers a playable digital city escape to enjoy on a smartphone.
