About the museum
The museum was founded to preserve and present the finds from excavations carried out on the Sorrento peninsula, and is named after the French archaeologist Georges Vallet (1922–1994). It opened on 17 July 1999 in Villa Fondi de Sangro, a neoclassical building erected in 1840 by Giovanni De Sangro, prince of Fondi, on a cliff above the Marina di Cassano. The villa and park were bought by the Comune of Piano di Sorrento in the 1990s and restored by the Soprintendenza archeologica di Napoli e Caserta (Archaeological Superintendency of Naples and Caserta).
On the ground floor are the reconstruction of the funerary tumulus of the mythical founder, King Liparos, a colossal statue of Demeter, a mosaic floor from Marina di Puolo and a large marble female statue found in Sorrento in 1971. On the first floor are displayed materials from the Bronze Age settlements and the Archaic necropolises of Piano di Sorrento, Massa Lubrense, Vico Equense and Sorrento, the finds from the sanctuary of Athena at Punta Campanella, and the section on the formation of the city of Surrentum and on the seaside villas. In the park, half of a mosaic nymphaeum from a Roman seaside villa at Massa Lubrense has been reconstructed.
