About the museum
The MATT was created to help the people of Terzigno rediscover a part of their past, starting with the exhibition “Pompei oltre le mura” (Pompeii beyond the walls), devoted to the Roman villas of the area. The museum was set up by the Comune together with the Parco Nazionale del Vesuvio (Vesuvius National Park) and under the direction of the Parco archeologico di Pompei (Pompeii Archaeological Park), and opened in 2019.
It is housed in a former municipal slaughterhouse built around the 1930s, restored with European funds after years of neglect. The villas come from Cava Ranieri, in the Vesuvius National Park: excavations by the Soprintendenza between 1981 and 2011 brought to light three villas (1, 2 and 6), farm estates specialising in viticulture and olive oil production, which were then reburied for reasons of protection.
The route, on the first level, begins with a room on the history of the Vesuvian eruptions and of the excavations, continues with tableware, amphorae, antefixes and farm tools, and ends with the frescoes of Villa 6, including the kitchen lararium and the triclinium in the Second Pompeian Style.
