About the museum
The museum originates from the finds of excavations begun in 1970 in the territories of Sarno, San Marzano sul Sarno and San Valentino Torio, and was inaugurated on 1 July 2011. It is housed in Palazzo Capua, in Via Cavour. Since December 2014 it has been run by the Ministry of Culture, and since 2019 through the Regional Directorate of Museums of Campania.
The route runs from prehistory to the Middle Ages and presents furnishings and grave goods from the valley's necropolises. Only part of the collection is on display.
Among the most significant materials are the Hellenistic cist tombs of the 4th century BC, reconstructed in the museum and coming from Galitta del Capitano, with two funerary paintings on stone slabs of the Samnite period, a Roman funerary statue, and bronze and silver jewellery and decorations of the 8th–7th centuries BC from San Valentino Torio.
