About the museum
The museum is dedicated to Antonio da Sangallo il Giovane (1484–1546) and is located on the ground floor of the Rocca dei Papi, the fortress that stands on the highest point of the hill of Montefiascone. It also works as a study centre on the architect, who was linked to the Tuscia through the works he carried out there, including the church of Santa Maria di Montedoro and interventions on the Rocca itself.
The fortress, a 14th-century structure, gained prestige in the Middle Ages, when Pope Innocent III chose it as the seat of the Rector of the Patrimony of Saint Peter in Tuscia; during the Avignon Papacy it hosted the legates sent from Avignon. Under Julius II, Sangallo worked here, carrying out the last interventions on the palace, completed in 1516 under Leo X. Today the Rocca includes a courtyard with archaeological remains and the Torre del Pellegrino (Pilgrim's Tower), from which there is a wide view over Lake Bolsena.
The exhibition includes photographs, drawings, plaster casts and models, with a thematic section on the architect's Roman works and an illustration of building techniques. The ticket for the Rocca dei Papi gives access to the museum, to the Rocca excavations and to the Torre del Pellegrino, and includes an audio guide in five languages.
