About the museum
The museum is dedicated to Piero Taruffi, a racing driver and engineer who won the last edition of the Mille Miglia in 1957, at the age of fifty. Founded in 1998 by the Associazione Piero Taruffi, it has occupied the entire former slaughterhouse on Via Fidanza in Bagnoregio since 2002. The building was restored by the town specifically for this purpose.
After part of the material intended for the Vallelunga circuit was returned to the family, the display was reorganised as a route through technical and scientific progress in motor engineering over the last century. The heart of the route is the permanent exhibition “Il Bisiluro ai raggi X – Anatomia di un bolide”, on show since 2011, with some of the roughly five hundred original design drawings of the record-breaking vehicle, some of which the engineer corrected by hand.
The museum also has a room dedicated to Federico Fellini’s film La Strada, which was shot in Bagnoregio, with the wedding outfits and a reconstruction of Zampanò’s motor tricycle; a collection of vintage radios and car radios; sculptures by Stefano Rossi made from mechanical parts; and a picture gallery that is enriched every year with a work inspired by Taruffi. The vintage cars and motorcycles on display belong to members and are rotated periodically.
