About the museum
The Batteria Mameli stands on the heights of Pegli, in Genoa, and was built by the Military Engineers in 1935 to defend the western side of the city, with three 152/50 anti-ship guns. In 1941 the ammunition stores were enlarged and a casemate was added for an automatic weapon to protect the access road.
The battery went into action during the French naval bombardment of 1940, firing 64 shots and hitting the destroyer Albatros, and again during the British bombardment of 1941. After 8 September 1943 it passed under German control, which had a gun position protected by a reinforced-concrete casemate built.
Today the complex, owned by the municipality of Genoa, houses a military museum and the seat of the Coordinamento Ligure Studi Militari, in a garden dedicated to the victims of Nasiriyah. The site is listed as open to visitors and includes the Todt casemate, two outdoor firing positions, a flare-firing position and two observation bunkers; in the surrounding woods an aerial adventure park has also operated since 2011.
