About the museum
The museum is housed in Pegli, in a Renaissance villa that belonged to Giovanni Andrea Doria and later to the Centurione family. It is part of Genoa’s maritime museum system (Mu.MA), together with the Galata Museo del Mare and other places in the city.
The collections document the maritime history of Genoa and the Riviera from the 15th to the 19th century: nautical charts, paintings, drawings, ship models, shipbuilding and navigation instruments, underwater archaeology finds such as bombards and culverins, armour and portolan charts. The route also included reconstructions of ancient shipyards and craft workshops and evidence of the everyday life of Ligurian sailors and shipwrights.
Today the villa is closed to the public: Musei di Genova and the VisitGenoa portal explain that the closure is being used to secure the site and plan new routes in view of a future reopening.
