About the museum
The speleological museum is housed in rooms of a building next to the Sanctuary of Nostra Signora del Gazzo, on the summit of the mountain (419 m) in Sestri Ponente. It was opened in May 1969 by the former quarryman Carlo Marzio, who was also its director, with the support of the CAI Bolzaneto speleological group, and it is kept open by its founder and by volunteers.
The rooms recreate the karst phenomena of the mountain, which is rich in cavities, some of which were destroyed by quarrying. Finds, photographs and panels illustrate the caves; on display are Quaternary fossils, including remains of a cave bear and a sabre-toothed tiger, as well as newspapers and photographs of the visit of Empress Elisabeth (Sissi) to the sanctuary on 28 March 1893.
