Museum of the Chapter of canons in the Duomo complex in Verona, with paintings, sculptures and archaeological finds, visitable together with the Biblioteca Capitolare.
The exhibition traces the connection of the Veronese scholar Scipione Maffei with the Capitolare, through codices he rediscovered in 1712, book bequests, autographs, first editions and his handwritten notes.
About the museum
The Museo Canonicale houses the works of art and objects that belonged to the Chapter of Verona cathedral. The collection was built mainly from bequests by canons and private individuals starting in the 17th century; the most important gift was the bequest of canon Stefano Trentossi in 1673, who assigned 62 paintings to the sacristy of the Duomo.
Over time the works moved several times: in 1820 most of the holdings were placed in the hall of the Biblioteca Capitolare, and in 1856 in the meeting room of the canons, where they remained until the Second World War. After the war the museum found a place in the restored building of the Biblioteca Capitolare and was inaugurated on 12 April 1988 with about seventy paintings and sculptures.
An extension in 2000 added archaeological material and sacred furnishings never displayed before. Among the works are a Romanesque sculpture of the 12th century, paintings by Antonio Badile, Michele da Verona, Liberale da Verona, Francesco Morone and Paolo Farinati, the terrestrial and celestial globes by Doppelmayer of 1728 and the portrait of Scipione Maffei by Fra Galgario. The route ends in 15th-century underground rooms with archaeological finds, some coming from early Christian churches below.
