About the museum
Palazzo Maffei stands on Piazza delle Erbe, in the heart of Verona, on the site of the ancient Roman Capitolium. The present form of the palace is due to the enlargement commissioned in the 17th century by the bankers Marcantonio and Rolandino Maffei; the Baroque façade is among the most spectacular in the city.
The palace has been carefully restored to house an art collection assembled over more than fifty years by the entrepreneur and collector Luigi Carlon, who entrusted it to the foundation Palazzo Maffei Fondazione Carlon. The works renewed the installations, restored the façades and courtyards, and brought to light stuccoes and frescoes from the 18th and 19th centuries that had been hidden under layers of paint. The museum was inaugurated on 14 February 2020, with a display designed by Gabriella Belli.
The route, which develops over several floors linked by a large helical staircase, brings painting, sculpture, applied arts and architecture into dialogue. The collection comprises more than 850 works covering about four thousand years, from Egyptian and Greco-Roman archaeology to Veronese painting, from Futurism and Metaphysical art to the masters of the 20th century and contemporary art. The visit ends on a panoramic terrace over the city.
