About the museum
The house faces the main street of old Pescara, which was once enclosed by a military fortress that was demolished during the poet's childhood. Gabriele d'Annunzio was born here on 12 March 1863 and spent his childhood here until the age of eleven, when he moved to Prato. In 1927 the building was declared a national monument at the request of d'Annunzio himself, and in 1958 it passed to the Demanio dello Stato (State Property Office).
On the first floor the first five rooms recreate the atmosphere of the nineteenth century with period furniture and paintings, accompanied by panels with extracts from the Notturno. The reception rooms retain tempera decorations in a neoclassical style by artists from the Marche.
The second part of the route presents the poet's wardrobe, with a red overcoat and gilded sandals; first editions of his works with woodcuts; the casts of the face and hand made in 1938 by the sculptor Arrigo Minerbi; and the room of the “Poeta soldato” (soldier poet), with war relics and uniforms. On the ground floor visitors can see the stable, dedicated to the poet's first horses, and a small courtyard with a well.
