About the museum
The museum grew out of the collection of Guglielmo Pepe, a veterinarian with a passion for the sea and director of the nearby fish market, who began gathering fishing equipment and marine animals in the 1950s. In 1981 the collection reopened as a municipal museum, and in 1999 it was decided to create a proper museum in a former school building next to the market. A first partial opening took place in 2013, but the expansion project was never completed.
The collection includes a diver's suit with its pump, numerous shells from around the world, and sections devoted to the skeletons of Mediterranean cetaceans and to sea turtles. Two large skeletons, of a sperm whale and a fin whale, have been placed in the rooms next to the fish market.
The protected marine animals section “Carmine Di Silvestro” holds several sea turtle specimens and the collection of cetacean skeletons. The Musei Italiani portal, in an entry from December 2022, lists the museum as currently closed for works.
