About the museum
The museum is housed in the historic Villa De Pisa, an elegant residence built in the 1930s and acquired by the municipality shortly before the museum's official opening in 1994. Assembled over around thirty years, partly thanks to the association “Amici del Museo di Olevano” (AMO), the collection holds more than 2,000 works in oils, watercolours, drawings, sketches, prints and sculptures.
The works bear witness to Olevano's role in the history of European landscape painting: from the late 18th century the village was a sought-after destination on the Grand Tour and attracted artists from Germany, France, England, Denmark and Norway. Among the leading figures is the Austrian Joseph Anton Koch (1768–1839), whose twenty original plates of the Vedute romane of 1810 the museum preserves, donated by his heirs in 1999. Alongside them are prints, drawings and lithographs by masters of nineteenth-century landscape painting such as Johann Christian Reinhart, Edward Lear and Franz Gustav Arndt.
The route extends to the present day, with holdings such as forty drawings by Heinz Hindorf and the archive of Ralph Wünsche, donated to the museum in 2007. The collection also allows works by twentieth-century and contemporary artists linked to the Grand Tour tradition to be shown on a rotating basis. The museum is part of the Organizzazione Museale Regionale del Lazio, the regional museum network of Lazio.
