About the museum
The Museo Ferroviario Piemontese in Savigliano was founded in 1978 to collect, preserve and, where possible, restore railway material of historical and cultural interest. In almost half a century it has saved more than sixty vehicles from demolition, especially traction vehicles and systems linked to the history of transport in Piedmont, including the lines under concession and three-phase traction.
Savigliano has been connected to the railway since 1855 and was an important industrial centre specialising in the construction of rolling stock; the museum stands where the Turin–Savona line meets the Savigliano–Saluzzo–Cuneo line.
The exhibition area covers about 31,500 square metres. Outdoors are locomotives, railcars, carriages and special vehicles, a 21-metre turntable, a terminus station recalling the steam era and a group of tracks with working points, where the vehicles are presented as if “in motion”. On the ground floor of one building, two sections are open with railway apparatus, accessories and equipment and a collection of models.
