About the museum

The civic archaeological museum of Castelfranco Emilia is named after Anton Celeste Simonini, a local artist passionate about ancient history and archaeology, who organised the city's first civic collection. The first display dates to 1999; the museum was later recognised by the Emilia-Romagna Region as a “museo di qualità” (quality museum). The new museum, opened on 18 December 2021 with support from regional funds, displays more finds than the previous one and presents a route whose display methods have been entirely rethought.

The seat is Palazzo Piella, in Corso Martiri. The route is organised chronologically and by territorial context, and allows the whole history of settlement in the area to be followed: from the earliest prehistoric communities to the Terramare villages and the Iron Age, through to Etruscan settlements such as that of Forte Urbano, and the Celtic presence. Multimedia displays accompany the exhibits.

An important section is devoted to the Roman period and to Forum Gallorum, the centre located between the colonies of Mutina and Bononia, of which the museum preserves archaeological, numismatic and epigraphic evidence. The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions, guided tours and educational activities in collaboration with the Soprintendenza and with universities.
