About the museum

The museum is housed in the Torre dei Bolognesi, a defensive bastion dating from 1307 in the centre of Nonantola, and is run by the Municipality. It tells the story of the Nonantola community from its origins to the present day, with a route that goes backwards in time as it climbs the floors of the tower.

On the ground floor is the section on the Jewish children of Villa Emma, 73 young people who were taken in at Nonantola between 1942 and 1943 and saved during the Second World War. The first and second floors illustrate the face of the town in the 19th and 20th centuries, with particular attention to the Partecipanza agraria (an ancient form of collective management of land of medieval origin).

The third floor is devoted to the Middle Ages and archaeology: it follows the development of the settlement around the monastery of San Silvestro, founded in 752 by the Lombard Anselmo, and presents, through virtual reconstructions, models and finds from the excavations in the historic centre and in the abbey complex, the history of the main medieval monuments. The fourth floor holds the archaeological section, from the earliest phases of occupation from the Bronze Age to the Roman period. At the top is the viewpoint, 38 metres high, with a view over the surrounding landscape. During opening hours the museum also works as a tourist information point.
