About the museum
The museum opened in 1982 with the set-up of the Roman section; the sections devoted to the Bronze Age, the Iron Age and palaeoenvironment were added later. It brings together the results of studies and excavations carried out in the area by Professor Elsa Silvestri from 1965 onwards. The museum was named after her in May 2011, as she had wanted it and created it.
The materials follow a chronological order and come from surface surveys and excavations in the territories of Budrio and Castenaso. The display begins with flaked stone tools of the Lower Palaeolithic, more than 600,000 years old, and moves on to the Bronze Age, with weapons, tools and vessels from the settlement of Trebbo Sei Vie and from the sites of Castenaso and Villanova.
The Iron Age section presents the grave goods from the ossuary tombs of Vigorso and Castenaso. This is followed by the Roman world of the colony of Bononia and the municipium of Claterna, with ceramics, glass, amphorae and millstones. The route ends with a reconstruction of two Roman tombs, one built of roof tiles and one of bricks, dating from the 1st and 4th centuries AD.
