About the museum
The collection was opened in 1978, when the Soprintendenza alle Antichità del Veneto authorised the deposit and display of material found in the territory of Isola della Scala and neighbouring municipalities. In the following years, thanks to the constant commitment of the Associazione Archeologica Isolana, the collection grew with new finds, so that in 1999 it had to be moved to its present location, the former Church of the Friars dedicated to Santa Maria Maddalena.
The museum occupies the 17th-century chapel of Sant'Antonio inside the church and is laid out in a single room, with display cases following a continuous chronological route from the Bronze Age to the Lombard period. It presents material collected along the rivers Tione and Tartaro and in the Lower Veronese plain.
The route begins with finds from the Copper Age (second half of the 3rd millennium BC), such as arrowheads, a polished axe from Tarmassia and a flint dagger blade from Giarella. Most of the prehistoric material from the Veronese plain, however, belongs to the Bronze Age, from the Middle to the Recent and Final Bronze Age, with pile-dwelling settlements along the depressions of the two rivers; the sites represented include Cà Magre, Trevenzuolo and Corte Vivaro.
