About the museum

The museum is housed in Palazzo Morelli-Gandini-Bugna, in Via Pace in Villafranca di Verona, and preserves evidence from the Risorgimento era. On the first floor of the building is a small room where Franz Joseph of Austria and Napoleon III met on 11 July 1859, a few days after the battles of San Martino and Solferino. The meeting laid the foundations of the armistice and of the peace that ended the Second War of Independence.

The rooms have recently been restored, recovering their original forms and colours. The ground floor houses the museum’s collections: original weapons, prints and relics of the armies that fought for the unification of Italy, as well as documents and personal objects of citizens of Villafranca who enlisted with the Garibaldini in 1859 and 1866.

Among the objects on display is a red tunic and a cap that belonged to a volunteer of the Cacciatori delle Alpi (Alpine Hunters).
