About the museum
The museum was founded in 1894 at the wish of Pio Capponi, its first director, with the aim of bringing together finds from the territory and those emerging from excavations at the sanctuary of Monte Sant’Angelo. Its first seat was the ground floor of the exedra (semicircular structure) in Piazza Garibaldi; in the 1930s the collection was moved to a new location, and the archaeologist Giuseppe Lugli curated its catalogue.
The events of the Second World War caused losses to the heritage, partly offset by later recoveries. The last reorganisation dates from 1999. Today the museum occupies the first level of the Torre Frumentaria, a 13th-century building overlooking the Foro Emiliano in the upper part of the town, and it also refers to other sites in the town's heritage, such as the Palazzo della Bonificazione Pontina and the Favisse (votive storage pits).
The collection consists mainly of sculptures and architectural elements in Roman marble: statues, herms, altars and portraits from the town and its territory.
