About the museum
The Museo civico di Fondi was founded in 1877 as the “Collezione archeologica” (archaeological collection), on the initiative of the mayor Giovanni Sotis, after his encounter with the historian and epigraphist Theodor Mommsen. It is considered the oldest museum in the province of Latina. The collection, made up largely of ancient inscriptions recovered by Sotis, was first housed in the former convent of San Domenico and then in that of San Francesco. In the 1950s the archaeologist Domenico Faccenna catalogued it and oversaw a new display.
In 1997 the first part of the new museum was inaugurated on the ground floor of the Castello Caetani. It was designed as a “museo del territorio” (territorial museum), to conserve the local heritage and serve research and teaching, with explanatory panels and information cards for individual finds.
The route is divided into two sections. The first, epigraphic and archaeological of the Roman period, brings together architectural fragments, inscriptions, milestones, funerary urns and reliefs from monumental tombs, including a strigilated marble sarcophagus from the 3rd century AD discovered in 1998 in Via Purpurale. The second, medieval and modern, presents coats of arms of the families of L’Aquila, Caetani and Colonna, stone furnishings and the alabaster “Madonna and Child” attributed to Domenico Gagini (1458).
