About the museum
The permanent exhibition “Homo sapiens e habitat” is housed in the thirteenth-century Torre dei Templari (Templars’ Tower), in Piazza Lanzuisi in San Felice Circeo, and is promoted by the Fondazione Marcello Zei, whose founding members are the Municipality of San Felice Circeo, the Azienda Provinciale per il Turismo (provincial tourist board) and the Zei family.
The exhibition presents prehistoric finds, stone tools and fossils discovered in the Agro Pontino, with particular attention to Neanderthal man and the skull found in the Grotta Guattari on Monte Circeo. The route is laid out in five themed rooms devoted to the disciplines needed to understand general and local prehistory.
The first room illustrates the geomorphological phenomena of the Quaternary era linked to glacial and interglacial phases, with fossils from the Pontine area, replicas of rare finds and a large virtual fresco on the evolution of primates. The second is devoted to the Grotta Guattari, with a diorama of the cave. This is followed by a room on palaeoecological reconstruction techniques, with replicas of prehistoric dwellings; a room with large fossils in their natural position; and a room with materials from the Neolithic obsidian deposit of La Casarina, Protohistoric grave goods and artefacts from historical times.
