About the museum
The Museo della Ceramica di Santo Stefano di Camastra opened on 24 December 1994 in the Palazzo Trabia, a building erected at the end of the 17th century by Giuseppe Lanza Barresi and bought by the municipality in 1994. The idea was to make the palace a place of history, art and tradition, and also a centre for research, study and promotion of Sicilian ceramics.
The collection documents the local ceramic tradition through everyday objects linked to family and working life: the flask or “ciascu”, wine and water jugs (“cannate”), oil lamps with one or more flames (including the thirteen-flame lamp known as that of Sant’Antonio), the tall, narrow two-handled jug (“bummulu”), lidded containers for olives and food (“burnie”), decorated plates (“fangotti”), holy-water stoups, the small “anforetta bic bac” jar, propitiatory pine cones, the piggy bank (“carusietru”), bowls (“lemmi”) and jars for oil and grain.
A large section is devoted to old majolica tiles, a point of pride of local production from the 17th century to the present. The museum also holds art ceramics by great Italian masters, including Pompeo Pianezzola, Alessio Tasca and Carlo Zauli.
