About the museum
The museum was created as the first regional demo-ethno-anthropological museum conceived from scratch in Sicily. A regional law of 1999 provided for its establishment; after funding in 2001, an agreement between the Regional Department of Cultural Heritage, the municipality of Mistretta and the Nebrodi Park Authority (Ente Parco dei Nebrodi) made its opening possible. It is dedicated to Giuseppe Cocchiara, an anthropologist and folklore scholar from Mistretta and direct heir of Giuseppe Pitrè.
It is housed in the former Palazzo di Giustizia (courthouse) and documents, through objects, tools, documents, photographs and films, the traditional production cycles and the trades of the interior of Sicily: not only shepherds but also woodcutters, charcoal burners and hunters. The sections cover, among other things, wheat and bread-making, vines and olive oil, sheep farming and cheese-making, flax, stoneworking, blacksmiths and farriers, tanners, confectioners, wheelwrights and carpenters.
The displays use educational panels, object cards, scale models and interactive multimedia stations. A collection of particular importance is that of paintings on glass, around one hundred pieces from the 18th to the 20th century from workshops in Sicily, Naples, Apulia and Veneto, as well as from Spain, the Netherlands and Germany.
