About the museum
The Museo civico di Airola occupies the north wing of Palazzo Montevergine, a building erected in 1608 by the Benedictine monks of the Congregation of Montevergine and transferred to the municipality in 1820. The same palazzo also houses the municipal offices and other public services.
The museum comprises an archaeological section and a historical-artistic gallery. The archaeological evidence consists of stone elements linked to a Roman-period settlement, including capitals and column fragments, displayed in the courtyard and in part of the cloister of the palazzo.
The gallery holds 16th-century panel paintings attributed to Teodoro D’Errico and a room dedicated to Francesco De Mura (1696–1782), with a recently restored Addolorata (Our Lady of Sorrows) and Deposition of Christ, and a fresco of the Assumption from the sacristy of the SS. Annunziata. A small display also presents sacred objects such as candelabra, monstrances, chasubles and copes. The gallery is primarily educational in purpose and is being expanded.
