About the museum
The civic museum was established in 1978 and opened in 1979 in Via Amendola; it was later moved to the town hall in Via San Francesco and since 2005 has occupied part of the former monastery of Santa Maria de' Commendatis. In 2009 it received recognition as a museum of regional interest and is a founding member of the Sistema museale Terra di Lavoro.
The complex was donated in 1560 by Diomede III Carafa and housed a Dominican convent, suppressed in 1867; the buildings passed to the Comune in 1912. The visit includes the church of the Assunta, with a Gothic portal, a fresco and 17th-century paintings on the vault.
The collections are spread over three levels. On the ground floor are the sections on the history of the town and on traditional crafts and rural life; the first floor holds the archaeology rooms, with finds from ancient Calatia, the picture gallery, local majolica and the treasure of the sanctuary of San Michele with ex-votos; the second floor hosts temporary exhibitions.
