About the museum

The idea of a diocesan museum in Sant’Agata de’ Goti dates back to the 1970s, but the first adaptation works were interrupted by the Irpinia earthquake of 1980. In 1993 Bishop Mario Paciello relaunched the project, and the museum was inaugurated on 27 September 1996. It holds sacred works of art from the diocese of Cerreto Sannita-Telese-Sant’Agata de’ Goti.

The collections are divided into two sections. The museum section is housed in the church of the Madonna del Carmine and holds archaeological and artistic finds, among them an early Christian slab of the 5th–6th century, the tomb slab of Abbot Antonio di Tramonto (1361) and paintings such as a late Gothic Pietà attributed to Silvestro Buono and an Annunciation by Giaquinto.

The section on the Alphonsian places occupies a wing of the Episcopal palace in Piazza Umberto I and recalls the years in which Saint Alphonsus Maria de Liguori was bishop of the city. It includes the courtyard with a lapidarium and the rooms he lived in, with a detached fresco of 1614, the simple episcopal chair used for audiences, and texts from the beatification and canonisation proceedings.
