About the museum
The museum is housed in the Casino di Starza Penta, a residence of the Carafa della Stadera family, lords of Maddaloni from 1465. The building, mentioned in 1552 as a fortified farmstead, was converted at the end of the 17th century under Duke Marzio III into a hunting lodge and pleasure villa; Charles III of Bourbon often stayed there during his hunting expeditions. After various vicissitudes, it was expropriated in 1939 and assigned to the State in 1993.
The museum, opened in 2003, tells the story of Calatia, today's Maddaloni, from its origins to the late Roman period, using a multimedia approach. The exhibition spans two floors, with five rooms, multimedia stations and an immersive room. On the ground floor the territory, the town and the necropolises are presented, with reconstructed tombs; on the first floor are the sections on Roman road networks, with a room dedicated to the Via Appia, on the aristocracies of the 6th–5th century BC and on everyday life of men and women in the Orientalizing period. In the courtyard a domus has been reconstructed, and the 18th-century chapel of the Blessed Virgin of Mount Carmel can be visited by appointment. In 2017 the museum received the ICOM Museo dell'anno award (ICOM Museum of the Year).
