About the museum
The Sanremo civic museum was for years housed in Palazzo Borea d’Olmo. In 2017 it moved to the 17th-century Palazzo Nota, which is owned by the municipality, in Piazza Alberto Nota.
On the first floor is the archaeological section, which holds the oldest evidence of the Sanremo area from prehistory onward, placed in context with models and dioramas that reconstruct the environments of the past. The historical section, devoted to the 19th century, displays an important collection of Garibaldi memorabilia and documents, which bear witness to the close bond between Giuseppe Garibaldi and Sanremo, his adopted city. The largest core concerns his friendship with the English poet Caroline Giffard Phillipson.
The picture gallery brings together works largely from bequests by the old Sanremo families Asquasciati and Ansaldi. The most significant collection is that of paintings and prints, from the 17th to the 20th century, of the poet Renzo Laurano (pen name of Luigi Asquasciati). One room is dedicated to Antonio Rubino, with stage sets, miniature theatres, pen-and-ink drawings and designs for fabrics.
