About the museum
The villa was built from the end of 1870 at the wish of the pharmacist Pietro Vacchieri, to a design by Filippo Grossi, in the Moorish style. Alfred Nobel bought it in 1891 and lived there until his death in 1896; he called it “my nest”. Here he worked on numerous patents and drew up the will that established the Nobel Prize.
The visit recreates the rooms in which Nobel lived and worked. In the basement are the laboratory with scientific instruments and apparatus, photographs and an area devoted to the Nobel Prizes; on the ground floor is a lecture hall with frescoes in Pompeian style; on the first floor the study, the library and period furnishings; on the second floor the bedroom with original 19th-century furniture. Among the documents on display is a copy of the will.
The museum also includes the permanent exhibition “Scopri l’Ottocento” (Discover the 19th Century) and the Galleria dei Premi Nobel, which tells the story of Nobel and of the Italian prize winners. In the park of about 6,000 square metres, with rare plants, stands the Bofors cannon of 1883 that Nobel used for range experiments.
