About the museum
The museum officially opened on 8 October 1980, when the ornithological and entomological collection of the land surveyor Domenico Malmerendi became public property, a few months after his death. In January 2011 the municipality closed it for safety reasons; the Gruppo Speleologico Faentino then took over its management under an agreement, with renovation work carried out by volunteers, and the museum reopened on 15 September 2012.
The building stands in the middle of a green area of over 12,000 square metres, once a plant nursery and today a botanical garden, with more than 170 plant species grouped by plant communities and a sequoia over 24 metres tall.
The Malmerendi ornithological collection has more than 2,500 specimens, and the entomological collection 572 boxes with over 85,000 insects. There are also local mammal fauna and a palaeontological and geological section with Pleistocene mammal remains from Oriolo di Faenza, including an elephant skull, Mio-Pliocene fossils from Brisighella, the collection of the Gruppo Speleologico Faentino, and a limestone block with dinosaur footprints recovered in 1996 at Porto Corsini.
