About the museum

The museum is housed in Palazzo Milzetti, a noble residence in Faenza that preserves one of the best-preserved neoclassical decorative ensembles in Italy. In 1792 Count Nicola Milzetti commissioned the architect Giuseppe Pistocchi to join the family houses, which had been damaged by the earthquake of 1781. Work was resumed in 1799 by Giovanni Antonio Antolini, who built the staircase and the octagonal hall known as the “Tempio di Apollo”.

Between 1802 and 1805 the painter Felice Giani and his workshop, led by Gaetano Bertolani, decorated the interiors, with stuccoes by the brothers Ballanti Graziani and by Antonio Trentanove. In 1808 economic difficulties forced the Milzetti family to sell. The palace passed to various owners, including the Rondinini family, who completed the west wing and the garden between 1830 and 1851. It was bought by the state in 1973, opened to the public in 1979, and the museum was established in 2001.

Each room is conceived around a theme, with painting, stucco and classical references. On the ground floor there is a dark vestibule inspired by Pompeii and a room with a ceiling in the manner of Villa Adriana (Hadrian’s Villa). On the piano nobile (main floor) are the main halls, including the Tempio di Apollo, the Galleria di Achille, the Sala di Ulisse and the Gabinetto d’Amore. Since 2014 the site has been run by the Ministry of Culture, and since 2019 by the Direzione regionale Musei nazionali dell’Emilia-Romagna.
