About the museum
The house in Via Manara in Faenza was the home of Raffaele Bendandi, born in Faenza on 17 October 1893 and died in the same house on 1 November 1979. From a modest family, he studied only as far as elementary school, briefly worked for a watchmaker and learned the art of wood carving. As a self-taught man he built up a library that still bears witness to his work.
Bendandi based his seismology on the hypothesis that earthquakes were caused by the attraction of the planets on the Earth, added to the gravitational influence of the Moon. As early as the 1920s he set up a geodynamic observatory and built seismographs, which were also sold abroad.
The Associazione “Bendandiana”, founded in 1983 to honour his memory, promotes the study of his work, supports research in geophysics and helps run the observatories. The visit to the house has three parts: the Museo Bendandi, the permanent planetarium and a section on earthquakes, information and prevention.
