About the museum
The civic museum is housed in the Castello della Contessa Adelaide, on the rock of Susa, named after the town’s best-known historical figure. The date of construction of the castle is uncertain: a Roman praetorium, a castrum, a medieval castle and a Savoy palazzo overlap on the site. In 1750 the building was renovated for the wedding of Charles Emmanuel III and Maria Antonia; medieval twin-arched windows and machicolations survive.
In 1559 a peace meeting was held there, and in 1629 Louis XIII and Cardinal Richelieu stayed there. A Napoleonic decree of 1806 assigned it to the town, on condition that schools be opened in it; after 1814 it became the military and political seat of the town and valley. Restoration work began in the 1980s.
The exhibition route includes an archaeological itinerary starting at the Roman praetorium and a museum section on the role of the Alpine passes and the Val di Susa in the history of the House of Savoy, with a wunderkammer in the atmosphere of the late 19th century and a permanent exhibition on climate by Luca Mercalli.
