About the museum
The museum occupies the former church of Santa Maria dei Servi, built at the end of the 13th century by the Servite friars just outside the walls of Città della Pieve and remodelled in Baroque forms in the 17th and 18th centuries. The building still shows the history of its transformations, from the Gothic apse to the Baroque interiors, with fragments of Renaissance frescoes.
The main work is the Deposition from the Cross by Perugino (1517), which has come down in fragmentary form and was commissioned by the Compagnia della Stella. Paintings from the 16th and 18th centuries hang on the altars of the side chapels, while a Gothic vaulted hall houses canvases from the 16th and 17th centuries owned by the Church. The crypt displays 17th-century altarpieces and the Etruscan finds from the tomb of San Donnino, discovered in 2015 and dating from the late 4th to the early 3rd century BC.
