About the museum
The museum is housed on the piano nobile (main floor) of Palazzo della Corgna, in the centre of Città della Pieve. It holds samples of minerals, rocks and fossils, plant and animal preparations and scientific instruments, mainly the work of the geologist Antonio Verri (1839–1925) and the agronomist Paolo De Simone (1859–1906), who worked in the Pieve area between the late 19th and early 20th century. The presence of natural history specimens from Arabia is particularly unusual.
The palazzo was built between 1555 and 1563 to a design by Galeazzo Alessi, at the behest of the marquis Ascanio della Corgna and his brother, Cardinal Fulvio. It consists of three blocks around an elegant courtyard reminiscent of Vignola's style; it was never completed, because in 1564 the people of Pieve freed themselves from the authority of the Della Corgna family. Since 1975 it has belonged to the Comune (municipality).
The rooms retain Mannerist paintings: in the Sala del Governatore on the ground floor, frescoes by Pomarancio; in the great hall and on the grand staircase, mythological scenes by Salvio Savini dating from 1580. The museum is part of a city circuit that also includes the oratory of Santa Maria dei Bianchi, the Museo Civico Diocesano di Santa Maria dei Servi, the cathedral, the church of San Pietro and the oratory of San Bartolomeo.
