About the museum
The museum occupies the former glass factory of Piegaro, a building that symbolises the village's identity. Archival documents attest to a glassworks on this site from at least the fourteenth century, although a workshop probably existed even earlier. The factory operated until 1968, when production was moved to a new plant outside the walls.
After a period of abandonment the building was bought by the Municipality and, thanks to careful restoration, turned into a rare example of industrial archaeology. The complex spreads over three floors, and a large model, the result of long craftsmanship, helps to understand how the rooms were laid out during the period of activity.
The route follows the stages of production: from the office area to the Sala delle Volte, perhaps the oldest part, from the mixing of raw materials (silica sand, soda or potash, lime) to the furnace hall with its chimney, the working area, the annealing tunnel (tunnel della tempera) and the storerooms. A multimedia route with QR codes allows an interactive visit. Glass-blowing in front of visitors can be seen only during the museum's events: the Festival del vetro in May and “L’opera dei vetrai” in October.
