Civic museum of Gubbio in the Gothic Palazzo dei Consoli: it holds the Tavole Eugubine, ceramics, a picture gallery and archaeological and Risorgimento sections.
Exhibition in the Sala dell'Arengo of Palazzo dei Consoli marking the centenary of Dario Fo, with works and materials from the Archivio Fo Rame on the cycle devoted to apocryphal gospels and popular Bibles.
About the museum
The Palazzo dei Consoli, originally the Palazzo del Popolo, was decided upon by the municipality of Gubbio between 1321 and 1322 and begun in 1332, with the participation of the architect Angelo da Orvieto and the Gubbio master Matteo di Giovannello, known as Gattapone. Together with Piazza Grande and the Palazzo del Podestà it forms one of the most daring medieval urban complexes in Italy: Gothic in style and over 60 metres tall, it dominates the city with its bell tower and panoramic loggia.
The civic museum originates in 1456, when representatives of the municipality bought the famous Tavole Iguvine (or Eugubine Tablets), seven bronze tablets with ritual texts in the Umbrian language. Over the centuries the collection was enriched through donations, purchases and the transfer of works belonging to religious orders and congregations. Since 1909 the museum has occupied the Palazzo dei Consoli.
Today the route extends over five levels and tells the story and culture of the Eugubine community from prehistory to the 20th century, with the Sala dell’Arengo, the Tavole Eugubine, the ceramics section, the picture gallery, the Eastern collection, the Risorgimento collection and the archaeological section.
