About the museum
The Museo Diocesano di Gubbio is located in the historic centre, between the cathedral of Santi Giacomo e Mariano and the Palazzo Ducale. The route occupies the Palazzo del Capitolo dei Canonici, built in the 13th century and later enlarged, where the college of canons responsible for worship in the cathedral lived; their communal life was regulated by Saint Ubaldo. It is part of the Polo Museale Diocesano, a unified cultural network that also includes the church of Santa Maria dei Laici, the church of Santa Maria Nuova and the Raccolta delle Memorie Ubaldiane.
The collection brings together objects from the cathedral, from religious buildings in the city and the surrounding area, and from some private owners. The archaeological section holds Roman funerary stelae, inscriptions and tomb slabs; the picture gallery houses paintings from the 14th and 15th centuries, including the panels by Mello da Gubbio with the Madonna enthroned with the Child, and works by Ottaviano Nelli and his circle, by Benedetto Nucci, Pomarancio, Francesco Allegrini and Sassoferrato.
Among the most precious pieces is the cope of Marcellus II, bishop of Gubbio and later pope, a 15th-century Flemish work preserved in the refectory, which has remained almost unchanged since the 13th century. The visit is completed by the treasury rooms with reliquaries, chalices and vestments, and the large Botte dei Canonici, a 15th-century wooden vat that could hold 387 barrels of wine.
